Material Selection Guide

Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel - HDG
This is the most widely used type of galvanized coating and offers the strongest corrosion resistance. The process involves immersing thoroughly cleaned steel directly into molten zinc at approximately 460°C, causing the zinc to react with the steel substrate and form a thick, highly adherent layer of zinc-iron alloy.
- Physical Properties: The coating is relatively thick, and a crystalline texture visible to the naked eye (known as “zinc spangle”) typically forms on the surface. It provides extremely effective sacrificial anode protection; even if the surface has minor scratches, the surrounding zinc will oxidize first to protect the underlying steel.
- Engineering Applications: Extremely suitable for projects exposed to harsh climates. Examples include heavy-duty outdoor metal supports, agricultural machinery components, and thick-plate structural members requiring long-term rust protection.

Electrogalvanized Steel - EG
Unlike the physical thermal reaction involved in hot-dip galvanizing, electrogalvanizing involves the uniform deposition of a layer of pure zinc onto the surface of cold-rolled steel sheets through an electrolytic process.
- Physical Properties: The zinc coating is relatively thin, but the surface is extremely smooth and uniform, with no zinc bloom. These characteristics give it extremely high dimensional accuracy and make it the most suitable substrate among all galvanized materials for subsequent surface treatments (such as electrostatic powder coating or liquid paint baking).
- Engineering Applications: It is widely used in indoor equipment or precision components where surface aesthetics are of the utmost importance. EG steel is the material of choice for manufacturing high-end medical device housings, indoor network enclosures, and high-precision CNC stamped parts.

Galvannealed Steel - GA
This is an upgraded material that incorporates a heat treatment step into the hot-dip galvanizing process. After passing through the zinc bath, the steel sheet immediately enters an annealing furnace (approximately 500–565°C) to be heated, allowing the zinc layer and the underlying iron matrix to diffuse thoroughly and form a zinc-iron alloy coating.
- Physical Properties: The surface is dark gray, completely free of reflections and zinc flowers, and features microscopic roughness. Its greatest engineering advantage lies in its exceptional weldability—electrode wear is minimal during resistance spot welding. At the same time, its microscopically rough surface provides excellent mechanical interlock with paint, resulting in superior coating adhesion.
- Engineering Applications: This coating is highly favored in the automotive industry and is also well-suited for complex sheet metal assemblies requiring intensive welding and subsequent painting, such as the internal frames of heavy-duty IP protection enclosures.

Galvalume / Aluzinc - GL
This is a high-end alloy-coated steel sheet, with a coating composition typically consisting of 55% aluminum, 43.4% zinc, and 1.6% silicon.
- Physical Properties: It perfectly combines aluminum’s exceptional thermal stability with zinc’s electrochemical protection. The presence of aluminum ensures that it remains free from discoloration and oxidation even in high-temperature environments up to 315°C, and its resistance to atmospheric corrosion is typically 2 to 6 times that of pure galvanized steel of the same thickness.
- Engineering Applications: It is ideal for equipment exposed to high temperatures or harsh outdoor environments. When designing outdoor battery energy storage system (BESS) enclosures, industrial heat exchangers, or high-end outdoor stoves for the European and American markets, aluminum-zinc-coated steel offers unmatched long-term stability.

Our extensive experience in galvanized steel fabrication helps us to avoid machining defects
Solutions to Machining Defects in galvanized steel fabrication Products
Our engineers are capable of resolving common processing challenges—such as microcracks in the galvanized coating or porosity in welds during tight bending. We maintain strict control over every stage of the process, from raw material verification to advanced post-treatment and powder coating.

Porosity Issues in Galvanized Sheet Welding?
Porosity is the most common quality defect encountered during the welding of galvanized sheets. This is caused by the fact that zinc’s melting point (approximately 419°C) is much lower than that of steel (approximately 1500°C). The high temperatures during welding cause the surface zinc to vaporize instantly. If the welding speed is too fast or gas evacuation is inadequate, the vaporized zinc will become trapped in the molten weld pool. Upon solidification, this forms porosity, which severely compromises the mechanical strength of the weld.
Our solution:
The key to resolving problems associated with welding galvanized steel lies in process control. Prior to welding, we mechanically grind an area of at least 20 mm on both sides of the groove to remove the zinc coating.
At the same time, we employ argon-rich mixed-gas shielded arc welding, appropriately reduce the welding speed, and adjust the torch angle to prolong the residence time of the molten pool, thereby providing sufficient escape pathways for zinc vapor and ensuring a dense weld bead interior.

Cracking and Peeling of the Zinc Coating at the Fillet of Galvanized Steel Bends
During the inspection of custom galvanized steel parts, peeling or cracking of the zinc coating is often observed at the rounded corners of bent sections. These galvanized steel bending cracks are typically caused by improper material selection (such as using sheets with a thick zinc coating or poor adhesion) or an excessively small bending radius (R). Under severe bending stress, the zinc coating—which has low elongation—cannot deform in sync with the steel substrate and consequently peels off.
Our Solution:
We implement systematic quality control starting from the material source and extending to die design. We prioritize materials with low zinc coatings or eco-friendly passivation layers that offer excellent processability.
In process design, we strictly adhere to the principle that “the bending radius must not be less than the sheet thickness” and appropriately increase the width of the lower die groove to reduce bending stress. During bending, we use anti-scratch protective film to minimize friction, thereby perfectly preserving the integrity and rust-preventive properties of the zinc coating.

White Rust Spots on Custom-Made Galvanized Steel Machined Parts During Overseas Transport
After machining is complete, if packaging or ocean freight handling is improper, an unsightly white powdery layer—known as “white rust”—often appears on the surface of the workpieces. This occurs when machined parts are tightly stacked in environments that are damp, poorly ventilated, or subject to condensation due to temperature differences. The zinc coating reacts electrochemically with moisture and carbon dioxide in the air, forming a loose, basic zinc carbonate.
Our Solution:
Implementing strict white rust prevention procedures is crucial. After machining, we dry the products and apply an environmentally friendly, chromium-free surface passivation treatment. During packaging, moisture-proof paper or plastic spacers are inserted between workpieces to prevent direct metal-to-metal contact. High-capacity desiccants are placed inside the shipping containers, which are then vacuum-sealed to ensure a dry environment during transoceanic shipping and to maintain the original quality of the products upon delivery.

Paint Peeling from the Galvanized Coating on Galvanized Steel Parts
The “galvanizing + spray coating” dual-protection process is commonly required, but many manufacturers experience large-scale peeling of the coating shortly after delivery. The root cause of these zinc coating adhesion issues is the presence of invisible “zinc dust” (an oxide layer) or residual processing oils on the galvanized surface. If pretreatment is incomplete, or if trace amounts of moisture within the zinc layer vaporize during baking, causing “outgassing,” the coating’s adhesion will be compromised.
Our Solution:
We strictly adhere to a three-step pretreatment process for powder coating over galvanized steel. First, we perform alkaline degreasing and mild acid etching to thoroughly remove the surface oxide layer and passivation film, creating a microscopically rough surface;
second, we apply a silane treatment to enhance adhesion; and finally, we conduct high-temperature pre-baking before spraying to expel all gases and use specialized anti-outgassing powders to ensure the coating’s adhesion meets the highest grade in the cross-cut test.
