What is an IP enclosure?
IP enclosures are precision-engineered enclosures designed to comply with IEC 60529 and NEMA standards, providing reliable protection for critical electrical components against dust, moisture, and harsh environmental conditions.
With over 20 years of experience in metal enclosure fabrication, Supro understands that achieving verifiable IP66 or IP67 protection ratings requires strict process execution on the production line. That is why we utilize high-precision CNC laser cutting, capillary-free continuous TIG welding, and automated field-in-place foam gaskets (FIPG) to ensure absolute seal integrity under pressure. Whether utilizing corrosion-resistant 316L stainless steel cold forming or reinforced aluminum alloy, we guarantee structural rigidity to effectively prevent door deformation and thermal distortion.

Common Manufacturing Defects in IP Enclosures: Analysis and Solutions
In the manufacturing of custom IP enclosures, on-site equipment failures are rarely caused by a single major defect; rather, they are mostly the result of the cumulative effect of minor flaws in sheet metal fabrication, material handling, and surface coating processes. By combining on-site failure statistics with industry inspection data, Supro has analyzed the most common types of defects found in IP enclosures.

Permanent Compression Set and Aging of Sealing Gaskets
After prolonged exposure to thermal cycling, UV radiation, and corrosion from industrial chemicals, sealing gaskets can harden, crack, or become permanently flattened. Once a gasket loses its elasticity (developing permanent compression set), it can no longer compensate for minute deformations and displacements in the enclosure, inevitably leading to water ingress.How to Solve This?
Supro’s IP enclosures prioritize silicone rubber or EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) gaskets, eliminating standard neoprene and low-cost rubber gaskets. In outdoor environments with direct UV exposure, our IP enclosures withstand extreme temperatures and resist UV-induced aging.
In addition, Supro utilizes field-in-place-formed (FIPG) foam gaskets in its IP enclosures. These continuous polyurethane (PUR) foam seals are formed through integrated spray molding, resulting in a seamless design. Unlike cut-and-glued strip gaskets, this eliminates weak sealing joints and offers superior compression recovery and resilience.
Pores and Pinholes in Continuous Welds
Corner welds on IP enclosures exhibit micro-pores and insufficient penetration, resulting in immediate failure of IP66/IP67 waterproof and airtightness testing. The root cause of these issues (welding process control) is contamination of the welds by oil residue from laser cutting; insufficient shielding gas supply and incomplete coverage of the welding hood during manual TIG/MIG welding.
Supro has implemented a comprehensive solvent-wiping degreasing process prior to welding; upgraded robotic laser welding and pulsed TIG welding equipment to ensure precise temperature control and stable argon shielding; and eliminated capillary micro-pores in IP enclosure welds, achieving fully airtight continuous welds.


Peeling and Blistering of Powder Coatings on IP Enclosures
Even minor impacts on IP enclosures can cause extensive coating peeling or internal blistering, exposing the bare metal substrate to direct contact with external moisture and dust.
The root cause (lack of surface pretreatment) is inadequate substrate preparation; rolling scale, cutting fluid, and welding fumes were not thoroughly removed, preventing the electrostatic powder coating from forming a chemical bond with the metal substrate.
Supro implements a multi-step, rigorous pretreatment process: alkaline cleaning and degreasing → multi-stage pure water rinsing → phosphating/zirconium-based conversion coating treatment. This process etches and roughens the metal surface, providing a solid adhesion base for powder coating and curing.
Transportation-related bumps, scratches, and surface wear
High-quality powder-coated and brushed IP enclosures arrived covered in scratches. The root cause (insufficient packaging protection) was vibration of the boxes during transport, resulting in metal-to-metal friction or contact with rough cardboard.
At Supro, after the powder coating oven has cooled and final product inspection is complete, low-tack PE polyethylene protective film is immediately applied to all external surfaces of the IP enclosures; non-abrasive EPE foam dividers are placed between stacked enclosures on the same pallet to provide separation.
