Aluminum

Common Issues with Metal Cladding

In modern commercial buildings, metal cladding serves as both the primary protective barrier of the building envelope and a key determinant of its visual appearance. Substandard manufacturing quality can compromise the performance of the rain screen, detract from the building’s visual appeal, and result in millions of dollars in remediation costs. Based on real-world field data and rigorous exterior cladding standards, we have conducted an in-depth analysis of several common defects in metal cladding, their root causes, and our advanced manufacturing solutions.

Weld Indentations and Discoloration

At the corners of fully welded cladding panels, excessive heat input from MIG or standard TIG welding can cause the base material to melt too deeply, leaving permanent dents, pits, or warping that show through the final painted surface.

Our certified welders use precision TIG pulse welding technology combined with custom copper heat sinks to efficiently dissipate heat away from visible surfaces. After welding, professionals grind, polish, and finish the corners to create seamless, integrated exterior edges.

Premature Fading and Chalking (UV Degradation)

Metal cladding can rapidly lose its luster and color vibrancy within just a few years, with the surface becoming chalky. This is because manufacturers use standard indoor-grade polyester powder coatings instead of outdoor-grade architectural resins.

We exclusively use high-quality PVDF (Kynar 500®) or FEVE fluoropolymer coatings compliant with AAMA 2605 standards for outdoor metal cladding. These high-performance coatings are specifically designed to withstand intense UV radiation and chemical pollutants, providing over 20 years of color retention.

White Rust (Damp Storage Stains)

Powdery white zinc oxide stains form on galvanized steel surfaces, or dark oxidation layers appear on aluminum surfaces. This is caused by moisture retention resulting from panels being stacked too densely and poorly ventilated during ocean transport.

We use export-grade VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) packaging solutions. Moisture-absorbing materials are inserted between panels, filled with industrial-grade desiccants, and shrink-wrapped with breathable, waterproof covers to ensure the product remains dry while traversing different climate zones worldwide.

Electrochemical Corrosion at Fastening Points

The root cause of this phenomenon in Metal Cladding is direct contact between dissimilar metals (e.g., aluminum panels fastened with carbon steel screws) in rainy or humid environments, leading to accelerated localized corrosion.

We have designed oversized, pre-punched mounting holes in our metal cladding system to isolate the fasteners. Our hardware kit includes nylon washers and EPDM gaskets for isolation, and we specify the use of marine-grade 304/316 stainless steel fasteners to break the electrochemical corrosion circuit.
