Common Issues with Metal Oil Tanks

In the field of industrial fluid storage, the quality of metal oil tanks directly impacts the proper operation of equipment and even affects strict environmental compliance with the EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). Even the slightest manufacturing defect can lead to catastrophic fuel leaks, fire hazards, or costly downtime. Based on past engineering review records and real industry pain points, Supro MFG has identified the most common defects in custom metal oil tanks. We analyze the root causes and provide systematic solutions covering everything from raw materials, molds and fixtures, machining, and surface treatment to logistics.

Galvanic Corrosion at Fitting Connections

If brass or copper valves are installed directly on a carbon steel tank, direct contact between metals with different potentials in a humid environment can create a galvanic cell reaction, accelerating corrosion of the base metal.

So how can this be resolved?

Review the BOM (Bill of Materials). Mandate uniform material specifications for fasteners and valves. If dissimilar metals must be connected, install dielectric flange kits (dielectric unions/gaskets) to break the electrochemical circuit.

Thermal Deformation and Flange Misalignment

When welding densely spaced nozzles and flanges, excessive localized heat input can cause sheet metal components to warp, making on-site pipe alignment difficult and resulting in uneven stress distribution on the gaskets.

Supro uses heavy-duty custom welding fixtures to secure critical points and employs a symmetrically distributed welding sequence to control thermal stress. Flange mating surfaces must undergo CNC machining after welding to ensure the flatness and hole tolerance of the metal oil tank.

Incomplete Penetration & Micro-Leakage

This is the most critical defect in metal oil tanks. It is typically caused by incorrect welding current settings, inadequate groove preparation (failure to cut V- or U-grooves), or robot welding trajectory deviations, resulting in lack of fusion at the root and subsequent leakage under long-term pressure.

Supro strictly adheres to the AWS D1.1 welding standard. Thick plates must undergo precise CNC groove machining. Prior to delivery, in addition to routine hydrostatic testing, 100% PT (penetrant testing) or RT (radiographic testing) must be performed on critical pressure-bearing welds to ensure zero leakage.

Internal Pitting from Condensation

Fuel or lubricating oil can produce condensation due to temperature fluctuations. Water is heavier than oil and settles at the bottom of the metal oil tank. If left untreated, carbon steel will rapidly undergo electrochemical corrosion, eventually leading to perforation of the bottom plate.

Supro incorporates a sloped bottom or sump during the design phase to facilitate regular drainage of accumulated water. For high-demand projects, an oil-resistant, anti-static epoxy tank lining is applied internally to provide physical isolation.

Transport Dents & Coating Abrasions

Large metal oil tanks are heavy. If packed on standard pallets, they are highly susceptible to tilting and collisions during forklift handling or the turbulence of international sea transport, resulting in dents or scratches to the external anti-corrosion paint finish.

We design custom heavy-duty anti-slip steel/wood composite skids based on the center of gravity of the metal oil tank. The exterior of the tank is wrapped in VCI rust-preventive film, with high-density EPE foam providing rigid protection at the corners. The tank is secured with high-strength straps to ensure it arrives in the exact same condition as when it left the factory.
