What is a Splash Guard?
A Splash Guard is a precision-engineered sheet metal barrier designed to contain hazardous liquids, flying debris, and coolants within a specific work area. Manufactured from high-quality, corrosion-resistant alloys—such as 304/316 stainless steel or heavy-gauge aluminum—these guards are essential for ensuring workplace safety, complying with OSHA standards, and extending the service life of equipment.
Through precision laser cutting and CNC bending processes, Splash Guards meet stringent dimensional tolerances, enabling seamless integration with complex mechanical structures. Since achieving proper fluid deflection and structural rigidity under dynamic vibration conditions is critical, standard off-the-shelf panels often fail to meet the demands of specialized industrial applications.

Common Issues with Splash Guards
Splash guards play a critical role in CNC machine tools, food processing equipment, and medical devices. They serve not only as a physical barrier against the splashing of coolant, chemicals, and debris, but also as a core component ensuring operator safety (in compliance with OSHA standards) and the trouble-free operation of equipment. Based on our years of hands-on manufacturing experience and customer feedback, we have systematically identified several common defects that can occur during the customization of Splash Guards, analyzed their root causes, and provided professional engineering solutions to address them.

Fluid Leakage at Seams
Coolant or lubricant seeps out from the joints or edges of the splash guard, causing slippery workshop floors and creating safety hazards. The primary causes include: the use of intermittent spot welding instead of continuous full-penetration welding; insufficient weld penetration; or the failure to apply industrial-grade sealant.
How can this be resolved?
For areas requiring high-level waterproofing, Supro employs continuous full-penetration TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding or high-precision laser welding. For lap joints in non-full-penetration designs, a cutting fluid-resistant industrial polyurethane structural sealant (such as Sikaflex) must be applied to thoroughly fill the gaps.
Premature Corrosion / Pitting
Shortly after installation, rust spots appear on the surface of Splash Guard, severely affecting cleanroom or food-grade application environments. The primary causes are the selection of the wrong stainless steel grade (using standard 304 instead of 316L in strong chlorine or highly acidic/alkaline environments) and cross-contamination resulting from stainless steel operations in carbon steel processing areas (embedded iron ions).
Supro strictly adheres to material segregation protocols. Finished products undergo passivation treatment with nitric or citric acid in accordance with ASTM A967 standards to re-establish a dense chromium oxide protective layer, fundamentally eliminating surface rust spots caused by iron contamination.


Bending Distortion and Warpage
The Splash Guard does not fit perfectly against the machine frame, with noticeable gaps at the assembly surfaces. The primary causes are: uneven internal stress distribution in the sheet metal parts; lack of mechanical compensation in CNC press brakes during long-length bending; or thermal deformation caused by the heat-affected zone (HAZ) during welding.
Supro uses high-end CNC press brakes equipped with dynamic hydraulic deflection compensation systems. During welding, we employ cold-wire TIG welding or optimized welding sequences, supplemented by specialized rigid fixtures to effectively control thermal deformation.
Powder Coating Peeling / Adhesion Failure
The powder or baked paint coating on the Splash Guard peels or flakes off due to equipment vibration or fluid impact during operation, exposing the base material. The primary causes are: inadequate surface pretreatment resulting in residual grease; and scale on laser-cut edges that has not been removed, leading to “false adhesion” of the coating.
Supro has established rigorous pretreatment processes (such as phosphating or sandblasting) prior to coating. The oxide layer on laser-cut edges must be removed through mechanical chamfering or using specialized edge-polishing machines. An ASTM D3359 cross-hatch adhesion test is conducted prior to shipment to verify coating adhesion.
