Metal wall panels are prefabricated metal sheets (typically made of steel, aluminum, zinc, or copper) used as protective and decorative exterior or interior cladding for buildings. Common Issues with Metal Wall Panels

In building exterior cladding and rainscreen systems, metal wall panels must exhibit perfect visual consistency and precise dimensional accuracy. Even minor manufacturing deviations can compromise the building’s visual appeal, complicate installation, and affect the integrity of the facade. Based on strict industry standards and field feedback, Supro MFG has conducted an engineering analysis of several major defects commonly found in metal wall panels, their root causes, and the manufacturing solutions we provide to eliminate these defects.

Inconsistent Joint Width (Dimensional Misalignment)

Metal wall panels fail to align correctly with the building grid, resulting in uneven joint gaps. This is typically caused by wear on bending machine dies or a failure to compensate for material springback during the CNC bending process.

We utilize multi-axis CNC bending machines equipped with active laser angle measurement technology. Every batch undergoes rigorous First Article Inspection (FAI) to ensure bending tolerances are maintained within ±0.015 inches, thereby guaranteeing perfect alignment between curtain wall panels.

Color Variation Between Batches (Metamerism)

When metal wall panels come from different coating batches or have uneven coating thickness, noticeable color variations will appear on the facade.

We enforce strict single-batch coating protocols for the entire project order. Our quality team uses a spectrophotometer to measure color consistency, ensuring that the Delta E (ΔE) deviation is strictly controlled within 1.0, thereby guaranteeing a uniform aesthetic for the building’s exterior.

“Shadows” Caused by Rear Reinforcing Ribs

The contours of the rear structural reinforcing ribs are visible on the front surface of the metal wall panels. This typically occurs due to excessive heat during stud welding or shrinkage of structural adhesives during curing.

We employ advanced capacitive discharge (CD) stud welding technology, which leaves no heat marks on the exterior surface of the Metal Wall Panels. When using structural adhesives (such as VHB tape or architectural silicone sealant), we strictly control curing temperature and pressure to prevent material shrinkage or shadowing.

Electrochemical Corrosion at Installation Points

When dissimilar metals (such as aluminum panels and carbon steel fasteners) come into direct contact in a humid environment, it can accelerate rusting.

Although installation is performed on-site, we have pre-punched slotted holes in the Metal Wall Panels during the design phase to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction. Additionally, we provide or specify the use of isolated installation systems (such as nylon washers, non-conductive spacers, and 304/316 stainless steel fasteners) to break the electrochemical circuit.
