What is a Weatherproof Enclosure?

A weatherproof enclosure is a protective housing designed to shield sensitive equipment—such as wiring, electronic components, and network devices—from outdoor elements like rain, snow, dust, sunlight, and extreme temperatures. It ensures reliable operation in harsh environments.

With over 20 years of experience in enclosure fabrication, Supro understands that true weatherproof performance requires more than just basic metal bending; it demands a structure capable of withstanding UV degradation, heavy rain, and extreme temperature fluctuations. We achieve this by using marine-grade 316L stainless steel or reinforced aluminum alloy, combined with a continuous TIG welding process that eliminates capillary action, thereby completely eliminating microscopic moisture penetration pathways. By integrating automatically formed in-place foam gaskets (FIPG) and UV-resistant outdoor powder coatings, we ensure that the weatherproof enclosure’s seal remains effective over time and prevent surface chalking of the equipment under intense sunlight.

Common Manufacturing Defects in Weatherproof Enclosures: Causes and Solutions

When purchasing reliable weatherproof enclosures, simply reviewing the spec sheet is not enough. Outdoor environments are harsh, and even minor manufacturing defects can lead to water ingress, UV degradation, or hardware failure. Based on actual quality assurance data and field failure reports, here are several key defects to watch out for.

Warping of Weatherproof Enclosure Doors Caused by Thermal Stress

Weatherproof enclosure doors may bulge outward at the top or bottom corners, preventing the gasket from being pressed evenly against the seal. The root cause is the use of metal sheets that are too thin relative to the door’s surface area during the manufacturing or design process, leading to deformation under the effects of heat gain from direct sunlight or residual welding stresses.

For larger doors, thicker steel plates or marine-grade aluminum should be selected. More importantly, CNC-welded internal stiffeners (U-channels) should be incorporated into the flat-pattern design to ensure the structure remains absolutely flat regardless of temperature fluctuations.

Deformation of the Weatherproof Enclosure During Transport

The weatherproof enclosure arrived at the deployment site already deformed, deviating from its original structure. The door was jammed against the cabinet frame, and the weatherproof seal was permanently damaged even before installation began. The root cause lies in the long-distance transport of the heavy, empty metal structure without internal bracing, compounded by excessive strapping tension on the shipping pallet. So, how can this be resolved?

Design customized shipping packaging. Insert temporary diagonal wooden or heavy-duty corrugated cardboard support rods inside the empty weatherproof enclosure. Use heavy-duty corner protectors and shock-absorbing EPE foam beneath the stretch film to ensure that the strapping tension is evenly distributed across the entire frame.

Capillary Leakage at Weld Corners

During heavy rain or high-pressure water jet cleaning, trace amounts of moisture can seep in through the outer corner welds. The root cause is pinholes, porosity, or lack of fusion in the continuous weld, typically resulting from inconsistent manual TIG welding or insufficient shielding gas.

Supro implements strict pre-welding solvent wiping procedures. Critical structural welds are converted to automated robotic laser welding or pulsed TIG welding. This ensures stable heat input, sufficient penetration depth, and the formation of fully dense welds free from capillary leakage.
