What Is an EMI/RFI Shielding Can
An EMI/RFI Shielding Can is a precision-engineered metal enclosure designed to isolate sensitive printed circuit board (PCB) components from disruptive electromagnetic and radio frequency interference. These custom EMI/RFI Shielding Cans operate on the Faraday cage principle, limiting the propagation of high-frequency noise to ensure your equipment meets stringent electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements while preventing crosstalk and signal degradation.
Our EMI/RFI Shielding Cans are manufactured from high-permeability alloys (such as nickel silver or tin-plated cold-rolled steel) to ensure excellent solderability, optimal coplanarity, and maximum decibel attenuation across a wide frequency spectrum. Because complex PCB structures require precise tolerances, off-the-shelf solutions often fall short of meeting these demands.
At Supro MFG, we leverage our advanced custom sheet metal fabrication capabilities to provide fast, high-precision EMI/RFI shielding can solutions that are fully tailored to your specific engineering specifications.

Custom EMI/RFI Shielding Can fabrication Material Solutions
At Supro MFG, we offer a full range of metal materials to meet the demanding requirements of any industry or environment, and we can proactively advise our customers on metal fabrication techniques that utilize the properties of the materials to maximize the life and functionality of their products.

Nickel Silver 770
Naturally corrosion-resistant and easy to solder directly onto surface-mount components, it offers excellent high-frequency electromagnetic shielding performance, making it the preferred choice for RF modules and automotive electronics.

Tin-Plated Steel
It offers excellent stamping formability and is cost-effective; the tin coating ensures good solderability, making it an economical choice for high-volume consumer electronics and low-frequency shielding.

It features extremely high mechanical strength and resistance to environmental corrosion, along with strong resistance to deformation. It is often used in aerospace and harsh industrial environments, typically relying on precision snap-fit designs.

Beryllium Copper
Combines excellent electrical conductivity with outstanding mechanical elasticity and exceptional fatigue resistance. It is commonly used in spring-loaded shielding covers and miniature devices that require frequent insertion and removal.

Offering top-tier electrical and thermal conductivity, these materials exhibit extremely high absorption rates for magnetic fields and high-frequency radio frequency interference (RFI). They are primarily used in precision medical imaging equipment and high-end communications hardware.

Extremely lightweight and non-magnetic, these alloys provide good broadband shielding and excellent heat dissipation capabilities. They are primarily used in weight-sensitive aviation equipment and large communications cabinets.

Common Issues with EMI/RFI Shielding Cans
When evaluating and procuring EMI/RFI shielding cans, the manufacturing precision and consistency of the product directly determine the yield rate of the PCBA (printed circuit board assembly) and the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of the final device. Based on our years of experience in high-end custom sheet metal stamping and customer feedback, we have identified the most common defects in the manufacturing and application of EMI/RFI shielding cans, and provide you with analyses of their root causes and engineering solutions.

RF Leakage / Reduced Shielding Effectiveness
The device fails EMC testing, and the shielding effectiveness of the EMI/RFI shielding can deteriorates significantly at high frequencies. The causes include: excessive gaps at the edges and corners; improper vent hole design (hole diameter exceeding 1/20 of the interference frequency wavelength); and uneven contact surfaces leading to broken ground loops.
So, how can this be resolved?
Optimize the structure of the EMI/RFI shielding can by adopting labyrinth seams or seamless deep-drawing. Precisely calculate and balance the relationship between heat dissipation vents and electromagnetic shielding to ensure the integrity of the Faraday cage.
Internal Component Short-Circuit Interference
The inner top surface of the EMI/RFI shielding can comes into contact with heat-generating chips or exposed pins on the PCB, causing direct hardware short-circuits and burnout. The causes of this issue include: insufficient design clearance in the Z-axis height; thermal sagging; and a lack of insulating protective layers.
Supro automatically applies Kapton (polyimide) high-temperature insulation tape or Mylar film to the inner top surface of the EMI/RFI shielding can, providing insulation withstand voltages of up to several thousand volts. We use 3D interference checks to ensure that absolutely safe clearances are maintained between internal components.

Plating Peeling or Flaking
Peeling of the electroplated layer at the bends or on flat surfaces of the EMI/RFI Shielding Can exposes the internal substrate, leading to galvanic corrosion and potentially contaminating the cleanroom PCBA environment. The causes include: incomplete degreasing and activation cleaning of the substrate prior to plating; and excessively small bend radii that exceed the ductility limits of the plated metal.
Supro implements extremely rigorous surface pretreatment processes. During the initial product design phase, we ensure that the bend radius (R) complies with material properties (typically R ≥ 1T). Batch sampling must pass the cross-hatch adhesion test or the 3M tape peel test to verify adhesion.
Discoloration After SMT Reflow
After exposure to the high temperatures of lead-free reflow soldering (approximately 260°C), the surface of EMI/RFI shielding cans may develop extensive yellow spots or oxidation marks, affecting product appearance and corrosion resistance. The causes include: the use of non-volatile, residue-prone stamping oils during the stamping process; plating processes unable to withstand instantaneous high temperatures; and poor storage conditions leading to minor oxidation prior to processing.
Supro uses high-quality, residue-free, volatile stamping oil throughout the entire stamping process. Our surface treatment specifications are explicitly designed to be compatible with lead-free reflow soldering temperature profiles, completely eliminating the residual impurities that can cause oxidation.

One-Stop Solution for Custom EMI/RFI Shielding Can
Typical Applications for EMI/RFI Shielding Can

Automotive Electronics and ADAS
The dense distribution of system-on-chip (SoC) devices and sensors in vehicles requires EMI/RFI shielding cans to possess extremely high vibration resistance and Resistance to High and Low Temperatures, ensuring that autonomous driving system signals remain free from electromagnetic interference.

Communications and 5G Base Stations
High-frequency signal processing demands extremely high attenuation rates and thermal dissipation capabilities. Shielding enclosures must reliably block RF interference over the long term during high-power operation to ensure the absolute integrity of base station signals.

Precision Medical Equipment
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and patient monitors have extremely stringent requirements for signal purity. They require complete isolation from low-frequency magnetic fields and high-frequency radio waves to ensure zero-error transmission of vital signs data and compliance with rigorous medical standards.

Aerospace & Defense
Radar and avionics systems are exposed to strong electromagnetic pulses and extreme temperature fluctuations. Shielding components must possess top-tier corrosion resistance, lightweight construction, and the ability to withstand lightning interference, while meeting military-grade and aerospace-grade durability validation standards.

Consumer Electronics
Smartphones and IoT devices have extremely limited internal space, requiring shielding enclosures to achieve ultra-thin, miniaturized, and complex multi-chamber designs while supporting automated surface-mount soldering and offering exceptional cost-effectiveness.

Industrial Automation and Industrial Control
Industrial environments are rife with noise from large motors and high-voltage arc interference. Shielding components must provide robust physical protection and exceptional low-frequency magnetic field isolation to ensure the round-the-clock operation of precision industrial control computers and IoT nodes.
