Common Issues with Metal Storage Shelves

Reliable metal storage shelves are the cornerstone of efficient inventory management. However, buyers often encounter various manufacturing defects that can compromise product safety, aesthetics, and service life. Drawing on extensive quality assurance data and expertise in sheet metal fabrication, we have identified the most common defects in metal storage shelves, analyzed their root causes, and proposed precision manufacturing solutions to eliminate them.

Warping of Shelving Panels

Metal storage shelves may develop a wavy or concave surface under light loads, resulting in an unstable surface for placing goods. The root cause is that the specified metal panel thickness is too thin for the required span, or that adequate support beneath the panel has not been designed.

Supro selects the appropriate sheet thickness (standard shelves typically use 18- to 20-gauge sheet metal) and installs “U-channel” stiffening ribs at the bottom of the panels using precision welding or spot welding to significantly increase the section modulus and eliminate warping.

Powder Coating Peeling and Flaking

The coated surfaces of metal storage shelves are prone to peeling upon even minor impact, causing the exposed carbon steel to oxidize immediately. The root cause is: insufficient degreasing prior to powder coating, or failure to apply an appropriate chemical conversion coating. Residual stamping oil hinders polymer cross-linking.

Supro employs a multi-stage automated cleaning system (using iron/zinc phosphating or modern zirconium treatment processes) to thoroughly etch and clean the metal surface. Additionally, we regularly perform cross-adhesion tests (ASTM D3359) on production batches.

Frame Wobble (Insufficient Torsional Stiffness)

Assembled shelving units wobble side-to-side or front-to-back, lacking structural rigidity even when fully loaded. The root causes include: excessive tolerances in connecting brackets, insufficient bending angles in upright profiles, or the absence of corner stiffeners/anti-wobble supports.

Supro uses advanced CNC bending machines to manufacture complex multi-bend upright profiles (such as closed tubes or tightly bent C-channels) rather than simple L-shaped angle steel. Precisely designed, tightly fitting corner reinforcement plates eliminate structural gaps.

Premature Rusting in Humid Environments

Red rust spots spread rapidly along panel edges, inside tubular frames, or in poorly ventilated warehouse environments. The root causes are: Metal Storage Shelves use standard cold-rolled steel (CRS) without proper edge sealing, or the “Faraday cage effect” prevents electrostatic powder from penetrating narrow internal corners.

How to solve this?

In humid environments, the base material should be upgraded to pre-galvanized steel (G90). Electrostatic spraying parameters must be precisely adjusted by professionals to ensure uniform coating thickness across all complex geometries and recessed corners.
