Metal warehouse shelving is a heavy-duty industrial storage system designed specifically for storing non-palletized inventory. Unlike pallet racks, which require forklifts, these racks feature flat surfaces that facilitate manual stacking of boxes, bins, parts, or bulk items.

Common Issues with Metal Warehouse Shelving

When purchasing metal warehouse shelving, structural integrity is the primary concern. A single point of failure in the shelving system can lead to catastrophic collapse. Based on real-world warehouse audit data and North American safety standards (such as RMI guidelines), we have identified several of the most critical manufacturing defects in metal warehouse shelving, their root causes, and the rigorous engineering solutions required to eliminate them.

Upright Torsion (Load-Induced Buckling)

When metal warehouse shelving is subjected to maximum pallet loads, the upright frames twist, bend, or buckle. The root cause is the use of commercial-grade steel with low yield strength (such as standard A36) instead of high-strength steel. Alternatively, overly simplified roll-formed profiles are used, lacking sufficient structural bends to enhance torsional stiffness.

Supro upgrades the raw material to high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel, with a minimum yield strength of 50,000 PSI (Grade 50). At the same time, the continuous roll-forming dies have been optimized by incorporating folded flanges and structural ribs to maximize the column’s section modulus.

Hole Spacing Drift

Along the length of a 20-foot column, the vertical distance between punch holes gradually increases or decreases, making it impossible to install the crossbeams perfectly level. The cause is slippage in the mechanical feeder during the continuous roll forming and in-line punching processes.

Supro upgraded the production line to a closed-loop servo-driven roll forming machine equipped with in-line optical laser measurement. This ensures zero spacing drift, guaranteeing that hole spacing (e.g., precise 2.0-inch or 3.0-inch intervals) remains perfectly consistent from top to bottom.

Uncoated Internal Channels (Hidden Corrosion)

Severe rust occurs inside enclosed tubular beams or deep C-channel columns, which is undetectable from the outside until the structure begins to fail. The root cause is the “Faraday cage effect” during the powder coating process, which prevents charged coating particles from penetrating deep recesses.

Supro regularly calibrates the kilovolt (kV) settings of electrostatic spray guns and uses specialized nozzle guns to force powder into deep channels. For extremely humid or refrigerated environments, Metal Warehouse Shelving should be manufactured from G90 pre-galvanized steel prior to powder coating.

White Rust on Galvanized Components

Hot-dip galvanized Metal Warehouse Shelving develops a chalky white powder on its surface before it reaches the end user. The root cause is that moisture condensation becomes trapped between tightly stacked galvanized steel components during ocean transport or storage in humid conditions, leading to rapid oxidation of the zinc.
