Common Issues with EV Charging Station Housings
EV charging station housings must not only withstand extreme outdoor weather conditions but also protect the expensive high-voltage electrical components inside from vandalism. Even the slightest structural or manufacturing flaw can lead to catastrophic failures at the installation site and result in costly post-sales maintenance. Below, we analyze the most common defects in the manufacturing and application of EV charging station housings and provide professional engineering solutions to address them.

Leakage at Weld Seams Leading to Failure of Protection Rating
Rainwater or high-pressure car wash jets penetrate the joints and enter the interior of the EV charging station housing, causing short circuits and tripped circuit breakers, thereby failing to meet NEMA 3R/4X or IP65 standards. The causes include: the use of intermittent spot welding instead of full-penetration welding at corners; porosity, slag inclusions, or lack of fusion in the weld seams; and incorrect calculation of sealant compression.
So how can this be resolved?
Critical water-exposed areas must be fully welded using robotic CMT (Cold Metal Transfer) or TIG welding. An integrated rain gutter should be designed along the flange edges of the door panels, and on-site foamed (FIPG) polyurethane gaskets should be used to ensure uniform compression of 30%–50% when the door is closed.
Powder Coating Chalking and UV Degradation
After 1–2 years of outdoor exposure, the surface coating of EV charging station housings loses its gloss, turns white, and chinks, severely damaging the brand image. This issue arises from incorrect coating selection—specifically, the use of indoor-grade epoxy powder instead of UV-resistant outdoor-grade powder.
Supro uses Qualicoat Class 1 or Class 2 certified pure polyester or fluorocarbon (PVDF) outdoor high-weatherability powder coatings to prevent such issues.


Insufficient Vandal Resistance / Failed IK10 Test
The EV Charging Station Housing suffers severe dents when struck by a blunt object or subjected to a minor vehicle collision, and the door lock can be easily pried open. The causes include: insufficient structural rigidity; exposed hinges; and weak anti-pry design of the lock mechanism.
Supro’s design meets IK10 protection rating requirements. Panels are made of high-strength materials (such as 2.5mm aluminum alloy or stainless steel), and all hinges are concealed within the door frame (vandal-resistant hinges). A three-point anti-vandal door lock (such as Dirak or Emka industrial locks) is used to eliminate external prying points.
Internal Condensation Accumulation
When there is a large temperature difference between day and night, condensation forms on the inner walls of the EV Charging Station Housing and drips onto the high-voltage motherboard or contactors, causing short circuits. The primary causes of this issue are: excessive airtightness of the housing without temperature and humidity management design; and a lack of air convection channels.
