Common Issues with Metal Fuel Tanks

For heavy machinery, commercial vehicles, agricultural equipment, and backup generators, metal fuel tanks are not only energy storage components but also critical safety components. Key considerations include whether the product can withstand continuous vibration, resist corrosion from complex fuels (such as ethanol-blended gasoline or biodiesel), and comply with strict emissions and leak prevention regulations set by agencies like the EPA and CARB.

Internal Corrosion Caused by Ethanol/Biodiesel (Internal Corrosion from Modern Fuel Blends)

Modern fuels (such as E10/E85 ethanol gasoline or biodiesel) are highly hydrophilic and corrosive. If ordinary cold-rolled carbon steel is used without internal anti-corrosion treatment, rust will form within months, eventually clogging the fuel pump and injectors.

So how can this be resolved?

Avoid standard carbon steel. The base material for Metal Fuel Tanks must strictly be aluminized steel or 5052 marine-grade aluminum alloy. These materials inherently possess excellent resistance to fuel corrosion, ensuring a long service life without the need for internal coating.

Baffle Failure & Internal Noise

Baffles are used to reduce fuel sloshing. If simple flat steel plates are welded directly to the tank body, the rigid connection cannot absorb the impact of the liquid, making it extremely likely for the baffles to deform and detach.

Supro employs specialized stamping dies to flange the edges of the baffles and punch weight-reduction and flow-guiding holes into the panels. During assembly, skip welding is used to harness the structural flexibility to absorb the kinetic energy of the liquid.

Coating Degradation from Fuel Spills

Fuel spills are inevitable during refueling. If the exterior of a metal fuel tank is coated with ordinary paint or powder with poor adhesion, the fuel will rapidly dissolve the coating, leading to extensive rusting and peeling.

How can this be resolved?

The surface of the metal fuel tank must first undergo SSPC-SP 10 near-white blast cleaning to increase surface roughness. It is then coated with a special polyurethane powder coating with excellent chemical resistance or an epoxy primer plus acrylic topcoat, and must pass the MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) solvent wipe test.

Transit Damage to Necks & Structure

Metal fuel tanks are large and irregularly shaped, with protruding filling ports and sensor interfaces serving as the product’s weak points. If improperly packaged, they may be crushed by heavy objects inside shipping containers during long-distance sea transport, leading to deformation of the ports or even denting of the tank body.

Supro does not use standard cardboard boxes. Instead, we utilize custom export-grade fumigation-free wooden crates (Custom Crates) and install high-strength hard plastic protective caps (Hard Caps) over all protruding ports. The interior of the crate features a contoured EPE foam matrix for support, ensuring that the Metal Fuel Tank remains in perfect “line-ready” condition after transoceanic transport.
