Common Issues with Metal Water Tanks

When purchasing or customizing metal water tanks, product defects can not only result in significant downtime losses but may also lead to environmental leaks or even safety incidents. Based on real-world engineering cases and industry data, we have summarized several of the most common manufacturing defects in metal water tanks, analyzed their root causes, and provided professional-grade, systematic solutions.

Weld Leaks and Porosity

Excessive heat input during welding leads to carbide precipitation (sensitization reaction), or insufficient shielding gas coverage and inadequate penetration. This is the primary cause of failure in metal water tanks under pressure.

Supro strictly adheres to ASME-certified TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding processes and uses high-purity argon for double-sided shielding. Prior to delivery, we conduct 100% NDT (non-destructive testing, such as X-ray inspection) and hydrostatic testing at pressures exceeding the design operating pressure.

Surface Rust Spots Caused by Cross-Contamination

Manufacturing facilities often fail to maintain dedicated production zones. Using grinding wheels or fixtures previously used on carbon steel to process stainless steel causes free iron ions to embed in the metal surface, leading to rapid rusting upon contact with moisture.

Supro implements a strict metal segregation manufacturing system (Dedicated SS Tools). Finished products undergo standard acid washing and passivation (in accordance with ASTM A380) to thoroughly re-establish a dense chromium oxide protective layer.

Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC)

Excessively rough internal surfaces in metal water tanks, or a lack of a drainage slope at the bottom, lead to standing water. Bacteria attach and multiply on rough surfaces, and their metabolic byproducts (acidic substances) directly corrode the metal substrate.

Supro mechanically polishes the interior of the metal water tank to a surface roughness of 10 Ra or lower. A conical or sloped bottom is designed to ensure 100% drainage. For pharmaceutical/food-grade tanks, riboflavin testing can be used to verify that cleaning leaves no dead zones.

Fatigue Cracking at Support Contact Points

High-frequency vibrations caused by pump operation, or thermal expansion and contraction resulting from extreme temperature fluctuations, can induce metal fatigue at the stress points where rigidly connected supports meet the tank body, eventually leading to failure.

Supro installs flexible expansion joints at pipe connections. For load-bearing bases, stress-distribution base plates are added to effectively cushion the impact of dynamic loads on the main body of the metal water tank.
