Metal Insulated Panels are a lightweight, prefabricated building material consisting of an insulating foam core sandwiched between two metal sheets. Primarily used for exterior walls and roofs, they combine structural, weatherproofing, and thermal insulation functions into a single, efficient “one-step installation.”

Common Issues with Metal Insulated Panels

In commercial cold storage facilities, building exteriors, and controlled-environment facilities, metal insulated panels are designed to provide uninterrupted thermal resistance (continuous insulation) and structural integrity. Any single manufacturing defect—such as internal foam voids or misaligned seams—can lead to severe thermal bridging, condensation, and violations of building codes. Based on strict industry standards and real-world field feedback, the following is an engineering-level analysis of several of the most common defects in Metal Insulated Panels, including their root causes and our rigorous manufacturing solutions.

Skin Delamination (Bubbling)

The metal skin separates from the insulation core, forming visible bubbles. This is typically caused by oil residue on the metal coil leading to bonding failure, or by improper temperature calibration during the continuous lamination and foam curing processes.

We employ an in-line corona treatment and a multi-stage alkaline cleaning process to ensure the metal substrate has excellent chemical affinity. Our continuous dual-belt laminator utilizes precision telemetry technology to maintain optimal curing temperatures for PIR/PUR core materials, thereby ensuring absolute overall adhesion.

Voids (Bubbles) in Foam Core Material

Voids within the insulation core are caused by uneven mixing of chemical raw materials, air entrapment during injection, or improper production line speed settings. Voids significantly reduce the thermal resistance (R-value) and weaken the panel’s load-bearing capacity.

Supro MFG employs a high-pressure, multi-component impact mixing head. Our automated continuous foaming production line operates in sync with precision mass flow meters to ensure uniform distribution of chemical ingredients, resulting in a dense, void-free, closed-cell core structure.

Foam Overflow at Cut Ends

Excess foam expands beyond the metal skin at both ends of Metal Insulated Panels, blocking installation tracks and forcing on-site contractors to perform time-consuming and labor-intensive manual scraping, thereby increasing costs.

We utilize an advanced suspended band saw in conjunction with an automatic edge milling system. This process delivers clean, precise cuts along the panel ends, creating factory-prefabricated grooves that allow for direct installation of tracks without the need for on-site secondary processing.

Thermal Deflection

After installation, panels may bend outward or inward. This is a physical reaction caused by extreme temperature differences (ΔT) between the inner and outer surfaces—a common occurrence in cold storage facilities—and is typically due to core density or panel thickness not being correctly selected for the span.

Our technical team conducts comprehensive thermal stress modeling prior to production. We precisely specify the core material density, panel thickness, and Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of the exterior surface to eliminate thermal deformation and ensure the structural integrity of the building envelope.
